How to Monetize a Free Webinar

Plus upcoming EduCreator LIVE events

Happy Tuesday EduCreator!

People will tell you making money online is easy. This has at this point become an internet scam: pay me to teach you how to make money online and I’ll teach you how to get other people to pay you to show them how to make money online.

There’s business and brand building, and there is “making money online.”

Justin has been hosting Friday EduCreator LIVE spaces all about Social Selling and we’re learning so much. Last week I shared an exciting new accomplishment:

After years of building community, months of coaching and many failed tries, I finally succeeded in a major feat in the world of social selling.

I generated revenue from a free workshop.

Hendo and I built a cohort of 50 people and hosted a hands-on workshop. 20 people showed up and we sold 4 offers. These are great numbers for “proving a model.”

How did we do it?

I want to share with you how I used the principles of community design and AI to make this happen.

Join me tomorrow for a pop-up space. I’ll be hunkered down at home preparing for the hurricane headed for Florida. Join me at 2pmEST where I’ll be walking you through the whole process.

Here are some highlights we’ll discuss:

- Cohort Model: Before promoting a free off-platform workshop or webinar (people sign up via email), create a cohort of 10-50 members of your audience that is built around the topic of your webinar.

- Find a Partner/Co-Host: I’m convinced that one of the reasons the offer presented was such a hit is because it was a unique 2:1 offer. I recommend finding a consistent partner or co-host to build with. Come up with a revenue share model if appropriate.

Case Study: Hendo and I started a video cohort before we planned out what the webinar was going to be. We listened to our community and they were asking for support starting their own livestream, so we responded by creating a special group.

- Host a Trial Webinar or Workshop: Schedule a trial session so you can meet with your cohort right away. Deliver value and give them an opportunity to meet each other. Share the overall vision of the group, even if you’re not totally sure. Use this content as “evergreen” content that introduces people to the group.

Case Study: We were able to grow our cohort to 30 members once we scheduled the first webinar. We took the replay from this initial event and used it to continue growing the cohort. Once we hit 50 members, we scheduled the first official cohort event which was a hands-on workshop.

- Conduct a Survey or Poll: Be sure to collect data from your cohort that specifically asks them what they would like to learn, what areas they need the most support with, etc. I recommend using something simple like a Google Form for this.

- Host a Hands-On Workshop using AI: Make your workshop hands-on so that your listeners are not just passive (very common for free events). Consider using AI tools during your presentation and encourage participants to use the prompt, custom GPT, or tool during the workshop so they have immediate results.

Case Study: For our hands-on video workshop, we set a goal that participants would have a brief and strategy plan for their projects and video marketing campaigns by the end of the workshop. Why is this powerful? Because there will be some people that will want to hire us to help them implement (and that’s exactly what happened). Hendo created the Brief Bot specially for this workshop and allowed participants to beta test it.

- Have a Solid Offer: Turning a free workshop into revenue relies very heavily on having a solid offer that is a natural and intuitive progression from the initial webinar and hands-on workshop. You’ll have to experiment with different offers until you find the one that works. I had never done a 2:1 offer before, but it was a hit!

- Turn Replays OFF: This is a new one for me and it seemed to work! After you host your initial webinar (trial), which will be evergreen and used to help build the cohort and onboard new participants, consider turning off replays. This will increase engagement and attention. You can always host future make up sessions!
