#26: Community can be the biggest marketing advantage

Happy Monday EduCreator!

Today was the first day I felt super off during the daily space.

It was show #21 (week 5) and every show before has felt perfect. Maybe due to a lack of sleep and a house full of sick boys (Dad and Romeo are sick), I just had this anxious feeling. Like I needed 10 more minutes before starting but here it was, show time!

This reminded me so much of being a special education teacher in the DC public school district (from 2007-2013). And I approach spaces very similarly. When the bell rings, it’s time for class to start. Regardless of how I’m feeling. Regardless of how much rest I got the night before.

I’m sharing this because today is Monday and on Mondays we discuss best practices for designing engaged communities with your Ideal Members. Turns out today, I needed to heavily rely on my community, especially the Founders, to make sure the show kept going, despite how I was feeling. This is not something I could do as a teacher. I couldn’t ask the other teachers to step in for me and lead the discussion; they had their own classes to teach.

To me, community is everything. It’s the reason I can be a Creator in 2024 while taking care of a 1 year old at home all day as well (usually with tons of help from his father, but turns out when Dada is sick, Dada is totally out of commission… won’t say anything more about that here! lol).

Whether you have a big project to accomplish and need the perfect team, or you are building a product and need the perfect beta testers and supporters, starting with principles of community design is the best way to go.

Tips for Connecting with Your Ideal Members:

  • Frequently check your new followers list. Look over the bios of new followers and send a DM to anyone that you’d like to connect with further. Personalization is key for cold DMs.

  • Use the List feature on X to organize and segment your audience. Create a list of Pro Creators and engage with their audience in the comments. Add smaller creators in your niche to another list and engage directly with them.

  • Use Spaces Dashboard to find spaces you can attend. Add them to your calendar for the week for times you are available. Plan to join on time, listen, and speak if you are able to add value.

  • Have a way to easily collect emails from your Ideal Members. This could be a Google Form (check out this guide) or a sign up form using a platform like Beehiiv.

  • Set up 1:1 quick call links using a free tool like Calendly and invite your potential Ideal Members to connect off of X.
