The MOST Slept on Marketing Strategy

Happy Thursday EduCreator,
After spending 10 years in the DC Public School system as a special education teacher and teacher coach/supervisor, I developed email-phobia. For this reason, I waited YEARS before starting my newsletter and intentionally building an email list. I am now a complete convert and believer in the value and seemlingly never-ending benefits of growing a community email list.
I spend at least 10-15 hours a week in live social events because they are the best way to network, build a personal brand people trust, and most importantly, they are how I engage and grow my community.
But speaking and showing up IS NOT ENOUGH.
The amount of live event hosts I see leaving so much opportunity on the table because they don’t have a way for their audience to join their email list blows my mind. But then I remember my own case of email-phobia and I realize: people simply don’t understand the value.
Don’t think of it as a newsletter. Think of your email list as the entry point into your community and this weekly (or more) email is your way of updating them, and ultimately connecting them with other members through live events.
What is Flywheel Marketing?
A strategy that treats your marketing efforts as a continuous cycle — not a one-and-done funnel. It’s especially powerful for building a community newsletter because it turns casual listeners into loyal readers, and loyal readers into active, engaged members of your mission.
The tips below will help you:
Attract: Live events bring people in and spark curiosity.
Engage: Events are interactive, giving people a reason to participate and keep coming back.
Delight: Events offer real value, inspiring attendees to subscribe to your newsletter and stick around.
This cycle keeps spinning, steadily growing your email list and community — one live event at a time!
5 Tips to Help You Turn Your Live Events into a Profitable Flywheel
✅ 1. Craft an Irresistible Invitation
Every live event should have a clear CTA to join your newsletter as the main hub of your community.
Offer an exclusive resource, highlight past newsletter gems, and tease upcoming content that only subscribers get.
This primes attendees to see the newsletter as the next step in their journey.
✅ 2. Feature Subscriber-Only Value
During live events, mention subscriber perks: early access to event replays, in-depth guides, or behind-the-scenes insights.
Create FOMO (fear of missing out) — let them know what they’re missing if they’re not subscribed!
This strengthens the "delight" phase of the flywheel, making your newsletter the natural place to stay in the loop.
✅ 3. Repurpose Live Content as Newsletter Teasers
Record live audio highlights and turn them into newsletter-exclusive mini-series or downloadable resources.
Announce during the event: “Get the full notes and key takeaways in tomorrow’s newsletter!”
This directly connects live event participation to newsletter sign-ups, closing the loop from "engage" to "convert."
✅ 4. Build Follow-Up Automation to Seal the Deal
After every live event, send a thank-you email to attendees (if you have their emails) with a direct link to subscribe for more.
Or, if you don’t have their email yet, offer a sign-up form with a compelling hook: “Get the replay + next event invite by joining our newsletter!”
This keeps the flywheel turning by leveraging the excitement of the live event.
✅ 5. Celebrate Subscribers as VIP Community Members
Publicly recognize new subscribers during live events — give them shout-outs, and share subscriber testimonials or success stories.
Position the newsletter as the go-to place for updates and community impact.
This celebrates the cycle of “attract > engage > delight” — making every new subscriber feel valued and encouraging others to join.
