The ONLY Metric That Really Matters
Join me next Tuesday at 12pmEST for a live Zoom Workshop about Starting Your Newsletter
Happy Monday EduCreator,
Have you ever seen someone with hundreds of thousands of followers, but hardly any likes or comments on their posts? It’s because they are not prioritizing the one metric that actually matters.
My content covers a lot of different areas: AI, Jesus, growing an email list, building a community, managing the complexities of life… Trying to measure success with all the different data points could easily get overwhelming.
I’ve never been one to care about impressions or how much the algorithm favors me. These are vanity metrics that can be paid for at the end of the day, rendering them less valuable.
The only metric that really matters to me engagement.
I am here to build community. One way I serve my community is through high value content. This content comes in various forms:
Live Audio Spaces
Newsletter Posts
Live Workshops and Networking Events
Coming Soon: a private community platform
Engagement is the difference between passive followers and active participants. Community members that are engaged will not only show up to live events, but they will do so enthusiastically and even share your work with other people.
In marketing this is called the flywheel effect.
How Do I Measure Engagement?
Engagement for me is measured according to the method I’m sharing content.
Live Audio Spaces
If I’m hosting or co-hosting a live social audio Space on X (my favorite way to engage my community), I measure engagement not just by the number of people that attend the Space but by how many speakers I have.
Engagement is not about filling up a Space with passive listeners. Because I’m seeking active participation, getting speakers on stage and passing the mic is top priority.
Newsletter Posts
One of reasons I love running a community newsletter is that I can easily measure engagement. The data point used to determine engagement is the open rate. I’m able to quickly see which topics (subject lines) my community responded to most.
This data allows me to tailor future content to best meet the needs and interests of my subscribers.
One of the biggest mistakes creators, community builders and entrepreneurs make is not responding to what their audience and members need most. When needs are met, people are more engaged.
Live Workshops and Networking Events
Getting people interested enough in an event to RSVP is one challenge, but getting them to show up live with their camera on is a whole other thing. I recently hosted my largest workshop ever. I had 75 RSVPs and 50 people showed up live!
When I have an event coming up, I take every opportunity I can to promote it with social media content, newsletter posts, and joining live discussions related to the topic. Sending reminder invites and making sure your most active community members show up is key!
